Retiring in Greece: Should You Rent or Buy?
You have decided to retire in Greece. Now comes another big decision: should you rent or buy your home?
There is no single right answer. You may want the flexibility of renting, the permanence of owning, or simply to rent first and decide later.
But in Greece, where you choose to live may matter just as much as whether you rent or buy.

A place you love in August may feel very different in February.
If you are considering buying, renting for six months can be a smart first step. Live there as a resident, not a tourist. Shop for groceries. Visit the local town. Check the drive to the nearest hospital and airport. See what stays open in winter.
You are not only testing a property. You are testing a life.
The dream location and the everyday location
Most people retiring to Greece want similar things: walking distance to the sea, a sea view, peace and privacy, but also shops, restaurants and everyday life nearby.
And why not?
Even with a comfortable budget, however, value for money matters. Sometimes moving just a few kilometres from a famous location gives you more space, a better property and easier everyday living.
Value for money isn't about spending less. It's about getting more of the life you want for what you spend.
Athens is different
Athens (and particularly the Athens Riviera) offers the sea while keeping you close to hospitals, specialists, shops, entertainment and an international airport.
That convenience can become increasingly important over time.
Whether you rent or buy depends on what you value more: flexibility or permanence.
Don't buy for the person you are at 65. Buy for the person you may be at 80
The hillside villa with the spectacular view may be perfect today. But what about the stairs, the garden, the pool or having to drive every time you need groceries?
Your retirement home should work for the life you want now, and, as far as possible, for the life you may want 10 or 15 years from now.
Rent, buy, or rent before you buy
All three can be good choices.
Renting offers flexibility. Buying offers permanence. And renting first gives you time to discover whether the place you fell in love with is somewhere you actually want to live.
Don't make a permanent decision based on a temporary experience of Greece.
Live the location, not just the holiday. Then decide what “home” should mean for you.
